Windows Vista is a rip off of Apple's OS. It offers shortcuts to a calander and shows a clock in the same format on the right side of the start-up desktop screen that Apple has been doing for years! What a rip-off. Not only is Microsoft trying to monopolize the OS market, they are stealing whatever ideas other mfgs have that are better than their own.
Microsoft needs to innovate - not duplicate.

When it comes to innovation and overall quality Apple is the leader. However, with that being said Microsoft has an overwhelming upper hand because they have set the standard in operating systems from the past. Companies like Dell Computer will keep Microsoft on top due to the fact that they offer a good product at a very reasonable cost. When looking at the overall quality Apple wins.

Even with Apple's polished innovation, much of what Apple has perfected has been in Linux in some form already. Apple is again a costly and exclusive alternative to Microsoft products. I have been using Linux for 10 years now. I have not suffered from lack of quality or lack of available software. As long as there is pre-installed Microsoft products on the shelf, Microsoft will be the first thing a PC buyer sees. Microsoft's leadership is all because of marketing, not because it is the best stuff out there. I use open source software to replace Microsoft products and Linux programs to cover the rest. Quality is a very subjective value because we compare the stuff we see. Linux is not on most peoples scope. Yet, Linux is free or low cost, will run on most hardware, including Apple machines and has enough available software also free or low cost to meet nearly everyone's needs. If you really must pay for quality, go buy Apple, but I am willing to bet that you will find Linux pretty good for what you can get for free.

3/4 of a year since my last post, things haven't changed much. Vista stills sucks but, I think folks will have to give in as MS won't be fixing it for a long long time. It sure looks pretty, especially on a shiny new laptop. MS did not improve upon the XP desktop very much. The most useful tool the file explorer is still buried deep in the menu system. If it weren't for desktop icon shortcuts you make for yourself, most of us would be using the search function to find things. Come on Bill, life is not about the operating system, it's about the applications and my files. Meanwhile, back on the ranch, life with Linux goes on sweetly and I didn't pay a dime to Steve for a Mac either.

March 2009 and I hope XP lives forever. Vista is sloooooowly becoming viable as MS offers one scary Service Pak after another. The talk and previews of Win7 seem good and might be worth a look. Microsoft is like the car makers who didn't get it until the Prius was being back ordered. So, was XP re-coded from scratch? Was Vista renamed to fool us all? Meanwhile, back on the ranch, life with Linux goes on sweetly, and still no Mac.
In the meantime scoot over to http://www.webi.org and check out Open Source software that runs on both Linux and MS XP (maybe Vista). This stuff is free (are you cash strapped like me?). Or go to http://www.schoolforge.net, same thing different focus. I bet you can run equally fast with Nike or Converse, you think MS has a lock on software? Not!! Dump MS Works, pick up Open Office or AbiWord.

OK, OK, so you're not amoured by Linux, that is OK (but you are going to miss a huge opportunity and fun!), Microsoft's Win7 is spilling into the public. I fixed my first laptop with Win7 on it. It looks like it sucks less. In fact it was really less annoying at boot up and ready to use in a lot less time than Vista. Shutting it down was a tad faster too. I didn't get to play with it as it was not my own laptop and I only fixed some hardware, but it was a nice experience. Linus Torvalds, inventor of Linux said that the operating system should be transparent. I think he meant just run the hardware and let the user run the programs. From Win3.1 to Vista we have had to put up with dealing with finicky operating systems, I hope Win7 is really a change. If it is always on the verge of breaking, it is not very stable. Hardware has variations, software has variations, users have variations, you have to run in spite of them all or the system is not dependable or reliable.
From first touch, Win7 looks good, of course Mr. Gates is no longer calling the shots, Mr. Ballmer I'm not sure about. If you got Win7 experience, spill it.
